From 1980 to 2010 Tauranga Orchid Society staged an annual display (ie, unjudged). In 2010 the TOS committee was asked by BOP judging committee members to look at changing  Tauranga to a judged show. This was approved and from September 2010, there has been an annual, judged show.

The silver tray presented each year as a trophy to the grower of the orchid named Grand Champion was donated by longtime Tauranga Orchid Society committee members Natalie and Brian Simmonds.
